It's amazing how long the M44 chassis endured. The extended life program produced the M35A3 with super singles, CAT engine and Allison transmission. In essence, head and shoulders above the Stewart & Stevenson crap they have now.

A Kaiser Reo with a Continental 'Ostrich' engine that runs on any combustible juice you put in the tank, like an ostrich, the freewheeling AVM type hubs tells me the 6x6 drive is part time. Transfer box has a simple in out dog clutch to the front axle actuated by an air toggle switch under the dashboard, no centre differential. On roads or hard surfaces the wagon is in 6x4 drive, drive to the back axles only, a fuel saving measure especially if any combustible liquid fuel is scarce,. Flicking the toggle engages 6x6 drive ,all six wheels driving for off road, but remember when driving back onto hard tarmac ,flick the toggle switch to 6x4 drive avoiding axle wind up as the Kaisers transmission is similar in operation to a Series 3 Land Rover or early CJ5 Jeep,. It is possible to convert the wagon to a 6 speed all synchro gearbox by Eaton ,Spicer, or ZF, as the Kaiser is built like a big Meccano set, you can change the chassis mounts to fit the 6 speed . You can still run twins on the back axles fitted with 11xR20 road tyres on the standard rims, as the Avon pattern bar grips offer dangerously low levels of grip on tarmac in wet weather.
